The mission of Harvard's Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences is to be at the forefront of scientific discovery of the Earth system and to help address pressing societal issues through innovative, interdisciplinary research and education. We embrace our central role at the university as an integrator of the physical and life sciences, pure and applied, and seek to further strengthen our interactions with colleagues in the social sciences and humanities that share a sense of stewardship for the Earth and the environment.

Please follow this link to an interesting feature article in the Harvard Gazette on Professor Charles Marshall's work on the "Cambrian Explosion". Quoting from the article, Charles' alternate theory suggests "that it was an increase in interactions between species, such as predation, that drove an escalating evolutionary process that led to the development of teeth and claws and the wide variety of characteristics that we see among Earth’s animals today."
